The SwirlX3D Viewer is a free 3D viewer that displays 3D files in VRML or X3D formats. It is a standalone application that can be used for opening VRML (.wrl), X3D (.x3d and .x3dv), and Sw3d (.sw3d) archives.
The professional version of the SwirlX3D Viewer adds the capabaility to view 3D files in other formats. It displays files in the following additional formats: Collada (.dae), 3DS (.3ds), OBJ (.obj), PLY (.ply), STL (.stl) and IGES (.igs, .iges). The professional version also displays Sx3d (.sx3d) files, which are X3D files with SwirlX3D extensions.
The program can adapt itself to older hardware but if a recent graphics card is available, it will take advantage by performing rendering and other operations using shader programs running on the GPU. The result is that many effects that were considered too computationally expense can now be performed in real-time 3D.
X3D uses an XML format that is encoded in UTF8 format, which is a Unicode encoding capable of cantaining text from any language. The SwirlX3D viewer will display any UTF8 text using fonts that are available on the host computer. If you have visited a webpage displaying some exotic foreign language then the fonts for that language should be available on your computer.
